Cornell’s Into The Streets Outreach Program Returns for its 23rd Year
Ithaca, New York – September 1, 2014 – Cornell’s largest philanthropic effort, Into the Streets (ITS) will send groups of students out into the community again this year to help local non-profit agencies through volunteer projects. ITS, a student led program of the Cornell Public Service Center strives to mobilize students to affect social change, starting in their local Ithaca community. This year’s event will take place on Friday, October 24, and Saturday, October 25, 2014.
Since 1992, ITS has planned and executed a yearly event providing more than 90 non-profits agencies student volunteers. In 2013, over 1,200 volunteers participated in various project including Beechtree Care Center; Books Thru Bars; Cancer Resource Center; Cornell Cooperative Extension; Downtown Ithaca Alliance; Ithaca Children’s Garden; Ithaca Public Library; Loaves and Fishes; Museum of the Earth; Salvation Army; Sciencenter; Southside Community Center and promoting energy efficiency through the Light Up Tompkins initiative. This year The Public Service Center expects a similar turn out.
In preparation for the event, students groups are now forming to provide volunteers for the two-day event. Teams of 4-13 members, usually representing their sports teams, Greek houses, or extra-curricular clubs will head to various locations in the surrounding area. In previous years, agencies have included local produce farms, demolition projects, and children’s education.
