Ithaca, N.Y. — A man was rescued and hospitalized Monday afternoon after nearly drowning at the base of the Ithaca Falls.

Emergency responders were called to the falls around 1:30 p.m.

They found that bystanders had brought the man to shore and carried him to the trail entrance, near the Lake Street bridge.

The man, who was here to visit friends in the area, was breathing but only semi-conscious, a press release said. The man was put in an ambulance and taken to Cayuga Medical Center.

The Ithaca Police Department is investigating the incident.

A press release said: “Fire Officials remind the community to only swim in designated areas and stay out of restricted spaces. Follow all warning sings. Failure to do so is unlawful and puts themselves and rescuers in danger.”
