Ronald Bergman, who owns a two-unit rental property located at 312 South Plain Street in Ithaca, was hit with the code violations.
Violations included unsafe structures and a failure to provide safe egress from the building. The building was condemned after an August 2012 inspection “revealed numerous longstanding violations,” but at least one tenant continued to live in the building anyway, a statement from the city said.
In April 2014, Bergman was charged with over 8,000 violations, according to the city. Among the charges he pleaded guilty to were failure to hold a valid Certificate of Compliance, Failure to Obey an Order of the Building Commissioner, and Failure to Provide Safe Egress, according to the city’s statement.
Bergman, the city said, “agreed to remedy every violation and bring the house in compliance with all codes within a period of approximately four months, with the failure to do so resulting in payment of the second $25,000 installment along with forfeiture of the property to the City of Ithaca.”
“To protect tenants from unsafe conditions we are continuing an aggressive enforcement stance and our attorneys office has secured another precedent setting victory,” Mayor Svante Myrick said in a statement on his Facebook page.
