Ithaca, N.Y. — In 2010, about 1,000 people in Tompkins County voted for Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins.

In 2014, that number more than tripled — over 3,500 people in the county voted for Hawkins on Tuesday, according to the Board of Elections.
All told, it amounted to 16 percent of the vote locally going to the Green Party candidate.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo still beat both Hawkins and Republican Rob Astorino en route to a commanding victory in New York state.
Cuomo pulled in 54 percent of the total vote to Astorino’s 40 percent and Hawkins’ 5 percent.
Hawkins’ strong showing in Tompkins County is a continuation of the area’s dissent from Gov. Cuomo.
Fordham law professor Zephyr Teachout, who challenged Cuomo in the Democratic primary, actually defeated the governor in Tompkins County.
She received 70 percent of the votes in the county — or 3,266 to Cuomo’s 1,274.
