Ithaca, N.Y. — There’s a 59 percent chance Ithaca will have at least an inch of snow on the ground for Christmas, according to a Cornell-affiliated researcher.

Jessica Spaccio, climatologist with the NOAA-funded Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University, has run the numbers with 50 years of snowy data. Her results were published on Monday.
Spaccio suggests that Syracuse — at 66 percent — is slightly more likely than Ithaca to have a white Christmas, whereas Rochester (56 percent chance) is somewhat less likely.
“A coastal storm dropped several inches in parts of the Northeast last week Dec. 8, but will it stick for Jolly Old Saint Nick?,” Spaccio said in a news release.
“Fairbanks, Alaska, Duluth, Minn., and Pinkham Notch, N.H., have more than a 90 percent probability of an inch or more on the ground on Dec. 25, are your best chances for a white holiday.”
