The Newfield High School Concert Choir will join the ranks of some of the most influential musicians ever when it takes the stage at the historic venue on January 17 at 2 p.m.
Led by vocal music instructor Alex MacDonald, 52 boys and girls will take a charter bus to New York City to perform four songs at the concert hall built by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1891.
The event is the largest the choir has ever been a part of, MacDonald said.
Mansfield University’s Dr. Peggy Dettwiler is directing the event, and chose 12 groups — including the one from Newfield — to perform a final song together. Dettwiler chose choirs directed by her former students, including Newfield’s MacDonald.
The performance has been something that MacDonald said has been in the works since April. In additional to the finale, the local choir will perform three songs during a 10-minute set allotted to them.
“It’s been quite an event to put together,” he said.
The entire $12,000 tab for the trip was funded through chocolate bar sales, fruit sales, donations, and a spaghetti dinner. Fundraising began in September.
