Ithaca, N.Y. — A local man was arrested Monday and accused of committing a hate crime, according to the Ithaca Police Department.

Jason Schwarz, 36, of Ithaca, has been charged with aggravated harassment in the second degree as a hate crime, a misdemeanor, and harassment in the second degree, a violation, according to a statement from IPD.
Schwarz was taken to IPD headquarters, arrested and sent to jail on $3,000 cash or $6,000 bond bail.
Here’s the account of the incident given by IPD:
Around 9:30 a.m. Monday morning, police were called to the 600 block of West State Street.
There, a victim reported that she had been in a fight with someone, later identified as Schwarz.
“The victim advised that during the altercation Schwarz spit on her and pulled clumps of her hair (dreadlocks) out,” the police statement said.
“The victim also advised that Schwarz repeatedly called her a racist name and told her to go back to what he believed was her birthplace (Jamaica). The victim identified herself as a black female. Schwarz left the area after the altercation.”
Schwarz was later arrested while walking on the 100 block of North Albany Street, according to police.
