ITHACA, N.Y. — A Brookondale man was sentenced Friday afternoon to 1.5 years in jail and a year post release supervision after police found materials to make meth in his backpack last summer.
William Apgar, 25, pled guilty to felony third-degree manufacturing meth on May 14.
On Friday, Judge Joseph Cassidy said, “The defendant has had an extreme substance abuse history.”
He said Apgar has been convicted of at least five charges in the past seven years and has had opportunities for drug treatment.
“What’s concerning to me…is that you think you’ll be able to do this on your own,” Cassidy said.
Apgar’s attorney Albert Fang asked the court to send his client to the Willard Drug Treatment Center, but Cassidy said there are other treatment opportunities in jail.
Police said Apgar and Christopher Merkley, then 25, of Ithaca, were”acting suspiciously” on their mountain bikes on the 100 block of Floral Avenue last July.
After speaking with the men, officers realized Apgar had an active warrant out of Ithaca City Court and searched his backpack.
They found “multiple precursors” used to make meth. Police then searched Merkley and found that he also had meth making materials.
