The following letter, written after Bordoni was injured, was read during the speech:
“This is one of the hardest things for me to do because I am speechless when I hear your story.
“To know that a small town Ithaca boy would be willing to sacrifice his life for others, including myself and my family, is such a magnificent thing.”
“It means most to me that you come home and your recovery happens soon. You are such an honorable man.”
Bordoni, an Ithaca High School graduate, died after he was wounded in Kajaki, Afghanistan in 2012.
He had been a rifleman attached to the 1st Battalion of the 6th Marines regiment, and served on two tours of Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012.
He also received the Leatherneck Ward for High Shooter in boot camp, four Expert Marksmanship badges, the Purple Heart, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and several other awards.
