NEWFIELD, N.Y. – Damage from flash flooding Sunday night and Monday morning might cost more than $1.5 million in repairs to public infrastructure in Newfield and West Danby, a Tompkins County official said.

The estimates do not include damage to private property.

“To have damage that exceeds what their whole town budget may be for a given year or a program…It’s devastating, ” Lee Shurtleff, Tompkins County Department of Emergency Services director, told WENY news.

Tompkins County Highway Manager Jeff Smith told county lawmakers Tuesday that damage from the storm is not enough to qualify for federal assistance, such as FEMA.

He said, “In some ways we’re thankful we didn’t reach that number (cost of damage).”

County infrastructure damage, he said, is conservatively estimated to cost around $100,000 to $200,000.
