ITHACA, N.Y. — The Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council released the latest data about crashes in the county earlier this month.

Its report uses information provided by police agencies to list the top 10 road segments and 20 intersections where people are most likely to be involved in a crash.
“It’s all about safety with transportation,” said Fernando de Aragón, director of the Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council.
He said city planners and engineers use data organized by the council to plan projects, road repairs and sidewalks, among other things.
For instance, he said an intersection by Pete’s Grocery, across from Taughannock Boulevard between West Seneca and State streets, was identified as a troublesome spot for motorists and pedestrians, based on crash data.
Last year, the city secured a $600,000 federal grant and budgeted $150,000 of city money to make the area safer for people who use it.
That, de Aragón said, is one of the kinds of projects people throughout the county use the data for.
He said the top lists released in the report are meant to create a snapshot of accidents in the county. He said crash rates are measure based on crashes per million vehicles that use the road.
To make the list, each road also has to have had at least one accident per year since 2008.
The data from 2013 is slightly different from other years, de Aragón said, because it also uses data from Cornell University Police for the first time.
The following maps provide a look at intersections and road segments in the city of Ithaca with the highest crash rates per million vehicles in 2013 and 2012:
Road segments are marked in blue. Intersections are purple. Fatal crashes at intersections or road segments are marked with red. Click the dots for more information about each area. Roads and intersections new to the 2013 map based on information from CUP are marked with asterisk.
