ITHACA, N.Y. — A “bumpout” being installed at one end of the Ithaca Commons could delay traffic for some motorists downtown this week.

The blog site for the Ithaca Commons construction project says that a work zone will be created at the intersection of East Seneca Street and North Tioga Street, reducing much of the 100 and 200 block of East Seneca Street to one lane.
The project will begin on Monday and is expected to be done by Friday, according to city crews. The street will be reduced to one lane from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
As previously covered in the Ithaca Voice, these curb extensions are intended to increase pedestrian visibility, shorten crossing distances and cause turning vehicles to slow down. The project at the end of the Commons will extend the curb line 8 feet into the intersection, according to city crews.
Additionally, an alert from the city website says that no detours are being put in place but that motorists should “expect delays and seek alternative routes if possible.”
