Rashidali J. Brown, 27, is in custody on unrelated warrants. He was arraigned at the Tompkins County Courthouse Wednesday morning.

Police said Brown and James “Pip” Marshall are both persons on interest in a June 27 shooting in West Hill.

Officials said police were called at 3:28 a.m. to an apartment at 150 West Village Place where they found a man with a gunshot wound in his leg. Witnesses at the scene told police that the injured man got into a disagreement with at least two people — Marshall and Brown — before being shot, and the men fled the scene on foot.

Brown was taken into custody last week. He was wanted on felonies for third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree burglary; a misdemeanor for second-degree criminal contempt and two counts of second-degree harassment, both violations.

In court, his attorney Luke Fenchel argued that court summons for Brown regarding the charges were being mailed to the wrong address and his client had no way of knowing about the appearances.

Deputy District Attorney Andrew Bonavia said, however, that it is Brown’s responsibility to stay in touch with his attorney, previously Seth Peacock, about charges pending against him.

Judge John Rowley agreed with Bonavia saying, “He had no legitimate basis for not knowing to appear in court.”

Rowley set Brown’s bail at $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.

After the arraignment, Bonavia said there are currently no pending charges against Brown in regard to the shooting.

Ithaca Police officers could not provide updated information about the shooting Wednesday afternoon.
