The Trumansburg and Ithaca fire departments were called around 4:15 p.m. to the South Rim Trail after the teen fell. Officials said she appeared to be hiking alone, and the incident was reported by a passerby who saw the fall.
“She actually ended up on a really slippery, steep part of the rocks that made getting to her tricky,” Lt. Dan Scherer, of the Trumansburg Fire Department said. “She fell about 15-feet from the creek.”
When emergency responders arrived at the scene, Scherer said they sent an EMT and paramedic from Bangs Ambulance down the cliff, along with Trumansburg Lt. John Foster. The rescuers were able to begin providing first aid, then loaded the patient onto a backboard to move her to a more accessible area for the rope teams.
“It was really huge that he was able to get down there with the medics quickly,” Scherer said.
The teen was then loaded into a stokes basket — a large basket a patient can lie in — which was attached to the waists of about six firefighters who began walking the girl about 400-feet up the cliff. Other firefighters at the scene helped support and pull the basket up with attached ropes, Scherer said.
Two medics from a waiting LifeNet helicopter met the firefighters about halfway up the cliff and provided additional treatment to the patient.
When she was taken out of the gorge around 5:45 p.m., she was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with severe injuries.
Officials ares still investigating the cause of the fall.
Scherer said rope rescues are rare, but training made the effort a success.
“We train on it a ton and we don’t see it very often,” he said. “It went really, really well. We were all really happy.”
State Police, New York State Park Police and Trumansburg Ambulance were also at the scene. The Enfield Fire Department was on standby at the Trumansburg Fire Department while crews worked to save the teen.
