ITHACA, N.Y. – The Creative Writing Program of Cornell’s English Department is pleased to announce the Fall 2015 Barbara & David Zalaznick Reading Series, which will commence on Thursday, September 3, 4:30pm, at the Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium in Goldwin Smith Hall, with poet and translator Ilya Kaminsky.
Kaminsky, whose family immigrated to America from the former Soviet Union in 1993, is the author of award-winning works Dancing in Odessa and Deaf Republic. A translator of poetry, Kaminsky’s own works have also been published in countries round the world.
Next the Department welcomes novelist Colson Whitehead on Thursday, September 24. Whitehead, the author of seven works such as The Intuitionist and John Henry Days, uses his voice to touch on topics such as perseverance, pop culture, and race, and has garnered many nominations and awards in doing so. It has been said, “No novelist writing today is more engaging and entertaining when it comes to questions of race, class, and commercial culture than Colson Whitehead” (USA Today).
The series continues on Thursday, October 15 with an interplay of fiction and poetry delivered by the Creative Writing Program’s own alumni. Fiction writers Siobhan Adcock ’04 and George McCormick ’07 will team up with poets dawn lonsinger ’05 and Cori A. Winrock ’08, all of whom will read from their works published since graduating from the MFA Program. The event promises to showcase the ongoing contributions of the Cornell Creative Writing program and its graduates to the wider literary world.
The series concludes on Thursday, November 12 with the celebrated poet and writer Marilyn Chin.Born in Hong Kong and raised on the West Coast, Chin’s books of poetry have become Asian American classics and are taught in classrooms internationally. Her latest, Hard Love Province, won the 2015 Anisfield Wolf Book Award. Chin’s other awards include five Pushcart Prizes, a PEN/Josephine Miles Award, a Fulbright Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, and a residency at the MacDowell Colony.
All events are free, open to the public, and take place on Thursdays at 4:30pm in Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium on the first floor of Goldwin Smith Hall.
