Victor M. Pirela Jr., 20, of Troy, is ticketed with failure to keep right after he fell asleep around 6:15 a.m. while driving west on State Route 366 in Varna located in the town of Dryden.

Police said they found Pirela’s green Toyota smashed head-on into a utility pole on the south shoulder of the road when they arrived.

A passenger in Pirela’s vehicle was taken in a Dryden Ambulance to Cayuga Medical Center with injuries that are not life threatening.

Police said the road became impassable because of low hanging power lines.

State Route 366 will be closed until about 3:00 p.m. Friday from Freese Road to Forrest Home Drive while New York State Electric and Gas workers repair the pole.

Tompkins County Sheriff’s deputies, the Varna Volunteer Fire Department, New York State Department of Transportation, Town of Dryden Department of Public Works, Dryden Ambulance and Cornell University Police all responded to the scene.
