ITHACA, N.Y. — The Tompkins County Legislature has proclaimed Oct. 18 through Oct. 24 “Freedom From Workplace Bullies” week in the county.

Speaking at the legislature meeting Tuesday night, Chair Mike Lane noted that nobody was in attendance at the meeting to receive the proclamation.
“We are proclaiming this the week to remember that any kind of bullying is bad — and, certainly, any bullying in the workplace is bad. It makes things uncomfortable for other people and is not to be tolerated,” Lane said. “We’re glad to be reminded of that.”
The week is connected to the Workplace Bullying Institute, which says that workplace bullying lowers productivity and hurts innovation at local businesses.
“Bullying costs employers,” WPI says on its website. “But bullying carries a tremendous human cost in terms of preventable stress-related injuries to the most capable workers among us.”
