GREECE, NY, November 6 & 7, 2015 – The Ithaca High School Model UN club won “Outstanding Delegation From A Large School” and 12 other Awards at the recent Hilton High School Model United Nations Conference 2015.
With only 17 delegates, and two students acting as chairs of committees (and therefore not “delegates” eligible for awards) the club took home the most prestigious award available to a club, and took top awards in a number of categories.
In their respective committees, Sarah Couillard, Bella Cullota, Isabel Dawson, club President Liz Rosen, Francis Schickel, Casey Wetherbee and Scott Williams took home the “Best Delegate” award.
In their respective committees, Jonathon Hawthorne, Alison Ke, Ben Monaghan, Charlotte Perri and Zak Stillman won “Outstanding Delegate” award.
Other important accolades awarded in their respective committees included “Best New Delegate” to Eva Bohn and “Honorable Mention” to Alexandra Gibbons.
This is the strongest performance by the team in over five years. The team has not received the “Outstanding School” award in at least five years. With 14 out of 17 award-eligible attendees getting honors, that makes the club’s 82% win-rate considerably higher than its normal 30-40% win-rate.Also, two students, Max Fink and Abby Cooper, acted as chairs of committees, a prestigious position at Model UN conferences. It has be traditional that only one student has acted in this role per conference.
(Chairs of committees are not eligible for “Best” or “Outstanding” awards as they choose the students who receive them per committee).
Other excellent work was contributed by teammates Theo Jung, Lindsay Fei and Ana McCullough.
This is also the first time in over five years that IHS has unseated long-time rival Brighton High School, from Rochester, NY, in the “Outstanding School” category. While Brighton has had a Model UN course driving its successes, Model UN at Ithaca has remained a club-based organization, drawing upon extra- curricular enthusiasm and faculty advisor support.
Michael Reiff is the Club Advisor this year, from the IHS English Department. Matt Prokosch, of the IHS History Department, acts as special advisor. Both attended the conference with the club.
