Ithaca Police Department Chief of Police John R. Barber would like to remind our residents and visitors to use caution when visiting the many beautiful gorges and trails in Ithaca.

With temperatures rising into the 70s and spring in full bloom, ice on the lake is unsafe to walk on and trails become slippery and difficult to traverse.

Some state and local trails have opened already and more are soon to follow. Please follow posted signs and do not veer away from a designated path, even if it appears safe to do so.

Please keep clear of any body of water until the ice is completely melted through. This includes the Cayuga Lake inlet near Stewart Park, the Cascadilla Falls, and the Ithaca Falls.

If you or someone you see is in danger please call 911 immediately and give calm, clear directions.
