Mayor Svante L. Myrick has announced the appointment of Dan Cogan as the new Chief of Staff for the City of Ithaca. Mr. Cogan, a long-term City resident, served on Ithaca’s Common Council representing the Fifth Ward from 2002 through 2011, and as Acting Mayor from 2006-2010 under former Mayor Carolyn K. Peterson.
Mr. Cogan is a licensed professional engineer and has worked at Taitem Engineering for the past fifteen years. It was there that he honed his management skills as a co-owner of a local company employing nearly 50 people, and managing two full departments. His focus at Taitem has been on improving the energy efficiency in commercial and multifamily buildings, and he is widely respected in the energy engineering industry. He has managed the Quality Assurance program for NYSERDA’s Multifamily Performance Program since 2007, and he led the creation of Taitem’s Aeroseal department in 2011.
Taitem Engineering President Lou Vogel said “Dan has been instrumental in growing our company from a small engineering firm to a major player in the energy efficiency field. His organizational skills are beyond compare and while we will miss him greatly, we are happy that the city will be gaining a person who can help make good things happen!”
“I’m very pleased that the Mayor has chosen Dan Cogan for the position of Chief of Staff for the City of Ithaca”, said Second Ward Alderperson Seph Murtagh. “As a member of the search committee for the position, I can say that we conducted a long and rigorous search process that involved several extremely impressive candidates, and Dan’s application definitely stood out. Dan has a unique and impressive background as a professional engineer and a former member of Common Council, and I’m confident he will be an effective manager of the day-to-day operations at City Hall.”
“I believe that Dan is exceedingly well qualified to serve the City in a role focused on managing and fostering cooperation between the City’s departments so that we can best serve Ithaca’s public,” said Mayor Svante Myrick. “Dan’s professionalism, knowledge base, and experience with the organization will be invaluable as we strive to reach our goal of building a perfect City.”
“The ten years I spent on Common Council was the most satisfying period of my career. I am grateful for the opportunity to once again serve this community. I have enormous respect for city staff and Ithaca’s elected officials, and I look forward to working with them to improve life in the city,” said Cogan.
Dan Cogan will serve as the City’s second Chief of Staff. His appointment is effective May 1, 2016.
