ITHACA, N.Y. — The Ithaca Voice was inaccessible to staff and readers Tuesday and early Wednesday due to a deliberate cyber attack against the website.

A story was posted on ithacavoice.com just after 10 p.m. Monday and by about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, the website was no longer working. It went back online around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

After conferring with our technical associate, we learned that the website experienced a deliberate cyber attack called a distributed-denial-of-services, which overwhelmed our site. More than 2,000 DDoS attacks are launched daily against major websites, such as banks and news organizations. People who take part in DDoS attacks can face federal charges through the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

In response to this attack, The Ithaca Voice has launched extra security measures to help prevent our website from going offline again.

We thank our readers for sticking with us while we got the website back online.
