ITHACA, NY — Please join us on Friday, July 1st at The History Center‘s First Friday Gallery Night to learn about all the exciting activities that take place at our historic one room octagonal brick schoolhouse, the only one of its kind in New York State!

Situated in the Town of Dryden, the schoolhouse has been serving fourth grades, home schools, and private schools of Tompkins County since the mid 1970’s through our Living History Program where students re-live a schoolday in the life of a late 19th century rural child.

Join us to peruse a display of 19th century school artifacts, as well as artifacts from our two latest programs at the schoolhouse: Digging Into Carrie’s Diary, a week long summer camp for children ages 8-13, and Come Dig With Us, a summer archaeological field school for teens and adults.

Since 2013 we have unearthed a wide array of artifacts on the site that help tell the story of this school house that has hosted hundreds of school children for over two centuries!

At 6:30pm there will be a presentation by Carole West, Eight Square Schoolhouse and Youth Education Director, and Brant Venables, a Doctoral Archaeology candidate at Binghamton University, highlighting both summer camps. Also on site will be Miss Bacon, one of the Eight Square teachers, and Loren Sparling, a seasoned archaeologist who has also been working on the school site for the past several seasons. We will be available to answer questions about all the unique programs that we offer at this historic gem in Tompkins County!
