ITHACA, NY – The Alzheimer’s Association invites Cortland and Tompkins County residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s presented by Brookdale Senior Living Solutions.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Sept. 18, 2016 at Cass Park, Ithaca. To start or join a team today, visit alz.org/walk.
Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. The opening ceremony takes place at 12:40 a.m. with the following immediately following.
Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for hundreds of expected participants in Finger Lakes to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony.
“Last year, this event broke its own fundraising record,” said Catherine James, chief executive officer for the Alzheimer’s Association, Central New York Chapter. “Our dedicated volunteer planning committee is working hard to surpass that mark in 2016.”
The 2015 event raised nearly $43,000.
In addition to the three-mile walk along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, participants will enjoy an expo of corporate sponsors and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
