Boynton Middle School in Ithaca, New York, proudly brings the delightful musical comedy Getting to Know… “Once Upon a Mattress” to the stage of the McCalmon Theatre for five performances in December.
If you thought you knew the story of “The Princess and The Pea,” you may be in for a tremendous surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that it may not have been the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of beguiling songs, by turns hilarious and lively, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides entertaining frolics. Chances are, you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again. This condensed adaptation of the original show is ideal for families with children of all ages and promises to enchant the audience with laughter and cheers!
“Once Upon a Mattress” originally appeared on stage in 1959 starring Carol Burnett as Winnifred in her Broadway Debut, while in 2005 Burnett took on the role of Queen Aggravain in Disney’s TV movie version. With catchy music by Mary Rodgers & lyrics by Marshall Barer, the audience will be delighted with the amusing performances of hits including “Shy” & “Happily Ever After.”
Evening performances take place Thursday, December 15, Friday, December 16, and Saturday, December 17, at 7:30 p.m.; matinees on Saturday, December 17 and Sunday, December 18 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students, general seating, with purchase available at the door.
This humorous, merry medieval presentation stars Madelyn Morris as Princess Winnifred, Max Rubenstein-Miller as Prince Dauntless, Corinne Ford as Queen Aggravain, Zachary O’Neill as the King, Julianna Cuevas as Lady Larken, and Eamon Makepeace as Sir Harry. Boynton’s performing arts team brings this magnificent production to the stage with direction by Robert Winans, musical direction by Nathan Parker, costumes by Liz Woods, sets by Michael Peters, choreography by Dana Kinney & technical direction by Erik Frank.
