ITHACA, N.Y. — Bike Walk Tompkins and the Finger Lakes Cycling Club are co-hosting their annual Ithaca Solstice Ride tomorrow night to celebrate the first official day of winter.

Bike Walk members describe the ride on their Facebook page as, “the shortest ride on the shortest day of the year.” The ride begins at 5:15 p.m. and will take cyclists down the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. Participants will meet in Cass Park at Gaia the Turtle.

The bike route will take the Cayuga Waterfront Trail from Cass Park, through Stewart Park, past the Visitor’s Center, and will then proceed on Cayuga Street bike lanes into downtown Ithaca.

The biking festivities will end at Lot 10 on Cayuga St. around 6 p.m., where organizing members are planning to provide free hot chocolate and other treats.

Cyclists are recommended to adorn their bikes with lights and to wear reflective gear and festive clothing. The ride will continue despite weather, unless it becomes too extreme. The Finger Lakes Weather forecast predicts no extreme conditions during the solstice tomorrow, with highs in the mid 30s and lows in the lower 20s.
