ITHACA, N.Y. — Escape the holiday shopping for generic gifts and come check out some unique gift ideas at Downtown Ithaca’s Gallery Night, a showcase of the latest art and multimedia works created by multiple regional artists that is taking place on Friday, Dec. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m., at 20 downtown locations.
Work from nearly 50 artists from the Finger Lakes and as far as New York City will be on display at State of the Art Gallery, 120 W. State St., as part of the “December Juried Show.” This showcase will feature oil, acrylic, pastels, charcoal, watercolor, mixed media and interactive sculptures, stone and glass tiles, and more. This site will also be the scene where Arnot Art Museum Executive Director Rick Pirozzolo will award up to $600 in prizes during an opening reception for the exhibit.
Another 50 artists will be showcased during painter Joyce Stillman-Myers’ show at the Community School of Music and Art. Representing traditional to contemporary styles, this much-anticipated show celebrates the vibrant and diverse visual arts interests of the community.
Photography buffs who enjoy natural beauty will appreciate Carl Schofield’s exhibit at Sunny Days of Ithaca, 123 S. Cayuga St. Schofield, a retired research scientist, is primarily interested in conducting nature, landscape and travel photography, particularly infrared landscape photography.
For those looking for a bit of wintery fun, visit CAP ArtSpace, 171 The Commons in Center Ithaca, where abstract artist Barbara Mink has her “Winter Journey” on display. Her exhibit explores the beauty of Ithaca with works that range from 4×5 foot canvases to smaller framed creations on paper, all in ink or acrylic.
If you attended last month’s Gallery Night and witnessed Alice Muhlback’s show Once Upon an Eye at Eye, you’ll want to come back to the gallery to view the second installment. This magical show features new paintings, interactive objects, and never-before-seen clips from Muhlback’s animated show of the same name. Eye is located at 126 The Commons.
Gallery Night guests are encouraged to try their hand at making their own poinsettia gift tag. Artist Caroline Spellman will assist guests with making these nifty tags at Handwork, 120 E. State St. Visitors to Handwork will also receive an introduction to paper quilling and will have the opportunity try this historic art form.
