LANSING, N.Y. — A vehicle smashed almost completely through the Lansing post office, closing the location for several days while plans for repairs are made.

“It went through…almost through it, out the other side,” said Sgt. James Vann, of the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office.

He said the vehicle crashed through the post office around 4:20 p.m. Friday, about 10 minutes before the office closed. No injuries were reported.

According to a social media post by David Holle, the vehicle crashed into the post office, damaging furniture, the walls and tossing mail throughout the office.

On Tuesday, the walls were still boarded up and the location was closed.

Vann said there does not seem to be any foul play involved in the crash.

“It was likely a mechanical issue with a vehicle,” he said, noting that the vehicle involved –what appears to be a white Jeep Cherokee SUV — has been recalled due to transmission issues. also lists a recall for Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs from the 2014-15 model years.

It’s not the first time a vehicle has smashed into the Lansing post office. The Lansing Star reports that in 2008, a Ford F150 plowed through the front window wall, narrowly missing customers as it rammed through.
