COVERT, N.Y. — A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash just after noon Saturday near Route 89 and Frontenac Road, an official said.

The woman was driving a sedan northbound on Route 89 with two children in her vehicle when she struck a southbound pickup truck, said Lieutenant Dan Scherer, of the Trumansburg Fire Department.

He said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the two children were injuried. The three people in the pickup truck, which included a male driver and two children, were also injured.

Helicopters were called to transport the five people to a hospital, but could not get to the scene because of the inclement weather. Bangs Ambulance and Trumansburg Ambulance took them to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment.

Scherer said he could not confirm the condition of the patients, but said they were all conscious at the scene and able to communicate with first responders.

Scherer said it appears that the woman drove into the pickup truck after veering off the northbound lane, but it’s unclear what exactly caused the crash.

When asked if the weather, ice or snow might have been a factor, he said, “It’s hard to tell…It might have been a factor. There was slush on the roads.”

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Department handled reconstruction efforts at the scene and is notifying the woman’s family.

This is a developing story.
