ITHACA, N.Y. — A co-founder of the Tea Party movement will take part in a debate at Cornell University on Tuesday arguing for the topic: “Trumpism can make America great again.”

Visiting speaker Michael Johns is a leader of the national Tea Party movement and is the executive director of the Tea Party Community, the largest social media organization for the Tea Party. Johns has a background in health care, has served as the White House speechwriter for George H.W. Bush, as a policy analyst for the Heritage Foundation and as the senior aide to various federal officials.

In the debate, hosted by the Cornell Political Union, Johns will argue that Donald Trump’s presidency has the potential to make America great again.

The event will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Founders Room of Anabel Taylor Hall at Cornell University.

The Cornell Political Union is a bipartisan organization that invites from speakers from prominent background to address pressing, political topics. Past speakers have tackled questions like “Has President Obama’s Foreign Policy Been Successful?” and “Is Brexit the beginning of the end for the European Union?”

The Cornell Political Union uses a debate format pioneered by the Oxford Union Society, meant to encourage productive discussion. As per the group’s debate policy, Johns will deliver a 20- to 25-minute speech and questions from the audience will follow.

The debate will be about 45 minutes in total and moderated by the president. When the debate has been exhausted, Cornell Political Union will vote to approve or disapprove Johns’ argument. The resulting resolution will be published on their website.
