ITHACA, N.Y. — Tompkins County is under a flood watch until Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a flood watch effective until 8 a.m. Saturday.
The area will see moderate to heavy rainfall Thursday into Thursday evening, with 1 to 1.5 inches of rain expected by Friday morning. Small streams and urban areas could also see poor drainage flooding in low-lying areas.

Several other counties in Central New York are also under a flood watch, including Yates, Steuben, Schuyler and Chemung.
In the event of flooded roads, the NWS reminds people to “turn around, don’t drown.” People often underestimate the force and power of water. Six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult, and it takes 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, and two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, the NWS says.
