ITHACA — Ithaca police are searching for a suspect that reportedly stabbed a man early Saturday morning.

At about 1:46 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 500 block of W. State Street to investigate a reported stabbing. Police say a man had approached a Bangs Ambulance unit on W. State Street seeking medical treatment for a stab wound to his left upper chest and neck area.

Lt. John Joly, of the Ithaca Police Department, said a Bangs Ambulance was traveling West on W. State Street and a New York State Police car was also westbound when the male victim drove past both and stopped in front of the ambulance. He approached the ambulance asking for help, Joly said.

The victim told police the stabbing occurred on the Commons, Joly said.

The man was transported by ambulance to Robert Packer Hospital for treatment because no helicopters were available due to the weather.

Joly said the man will likely be released from the hospital Saturday morning.
