ITHACA, N.Y. — Former Vice President Joe Biden will get a unique welcome to Cornell University when he comes to deliver the Convocation address this weekend. Knowing Biden is a serious ice cream fan, Cornell seniors and Cornell Dairy have churned out his own ice cream flavor named “Big Red, White & Biden.”
Biden will speak Saturday at Convocation ahead of Cornell’s Commencement on Sunday.
Biden is well known for his love of ice cream. He’s been the subject of countless memes, has shared a cone with Jimmy Fallon and has outright professed he loves ice cream. At a speech last year in Ohio, he said “My name is Joe Biden and I love ice cream. … You all think I’m kidding, I’m not. I eat more ice cream than three other people you’d like to be with, all at once.”
According to the Cornell Chronicle, food science major and senior Molly Mandel learned Biden was an ice cream aficionado after Biden was announced at the Convocation speaker in April. Mandel, who interned with Cornell Dairy, showed quality manager Deanna Simons some of the many images of Biden eating ice cream online.
“When I found out that Joe Biden was speaking, the connection was made instantly between the Cornell Dairy and his love of ice cream,” Mandel told the Cornell Chronicle.
The idea to make an ice cream for Convocation was floated to organizers and soon after the idea went viral.
“I had no idea that this ice cream would generate so much excitement, not just from Cornell but nationally,” Mandel said.
Cornell Dairy did some digging to find out what flavor would be best for a Biden-themed ice cream. Dairy Plant Manager Tim Barnard called the creamery at the University of Delaware, Biden’s undergraduate alma mater, to see what his favorite ice cream flavor is. It turns out it’s vanilla chocolate chip.
So, 70 three-gallon tubs of Big Red, White & Biden will be served over Commencement Weekend and at the Cornell Dairy Bar, the Cornell Chronicle said.
