TRUMANSBURG, N.Y. — On a sunny Saturday, Trumansburg rolled out the welcome wagon for its very first Porchfest.
Ithaca’s Fall Creek has hosted a Porchfest since 2007, but the new endeavor seemed a natural fit for Trumansburg, which is also home to the annual GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance, the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts, and a thriving weekly music scene with Main St. bars and restaurants at the center.
From noon – 5 p.m., over 40 local bands set up up shop on porches and storefronts around the village.
What was it like?
Hundreds of music-lovers came carting coolers, folding chairs and sun hats.
Trumansburg residents Darby Kiley and Sue Ritter watched Louiston perform in front of Town Hall. They planned to stay the whole day, depending on the heat.
Both had been to Ithaca Porchfest numerous times, and predicted that they would probably stay put in front of a particular porch rather than wander around.
(In the T-burg iteration, the acts were more spread out across town.)
“In Fall Creek, you listen to something for 15 minutes here, 15 minutes there, you’re constantly moving around,” Ritter said.
Many attendees had personal connections to the performers. Kana Kanda and her son, 7-year-old Lincoln Zinzola, were excited to see friends perform.
Zinzola, who plays guitar and has a penchant for Green Day, was in town from Boston, visiting his grandmother who lives in Trumansburg.
In fact, Zinzola was also playing a set himself from 1-2 p.m. in front of 52 Hector St.
Ithacans Nancy and Dave Gersh watched the Swamp College Brass Quintet in front of the Inn at Gothic Eves. They didn’t have a planned route, but were thoroughly enjoying the setting.
“There’s so much talent in Trumansburg,” Dave said. “After all, this is where the Moog synthesizer started. Trumansburg is music. It’s so intertwined.”
