ITHACA, N.Y. — Public feedback is being sought about how best to re-imagine local policing, including considering shared services for law enforcement.
Planner Andre Primus, of Highland Planning in Rochester, said the meetings are meant to share data collected by the Center of Governmental Research about how best to share local services.
Primus said attendees can share opinions about hypothetical questions such as:
- What would happen if there was one law enforcement agency for the entire county?
- What would it look like if local law enforcement agencies shared training resources?
- What would happen if nothing changed at all?
“This is just to see the results of the study, not announcing anything that’s actually going to happen,” he said.
The information, though, could later be used by the legislature or constituents to make informed choices about the prospect of shared services, Primus said. Shared services could be implemented locally to save tax payers and municipalities money, in some instances.
The meetings are as follows:
Monday
6 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the BorgWarner Room at the Tompkins County Public Library located at 101 E. Green St. in Ithaca
Wednesday
6 p.m. – 8 p.m. in Room 163 at Tompkins Cortland Community College located at 170 North Street in Dryden
Thursday
6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the BOCES Smith School Gymnasium located at 555 Warren Road in Ithaca
Primus said the study will also be available online by next week, for those who cannot attend the meeting.
