Rare, smelly corpse plant successfully blooms outdoors at Cornell— Cornell University has a unique and brief sight at the moment — a “corpse plant” blooming outdoors in a temperate climate.
The rare, smelly plant — Amorphophallus titanum or Titan arum — is an odd sight sitting in a planter in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Minns Garden. Titan arums are native to the hot and humid rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, and are threatened by deforestation.
2 – Lansing teen suffers ‘life-threatening injuries’ following accident
Police: Teen involved in Lansing accident has ‘life-threatening injuries’ – Police have said that a male teenager involved in a motor vehicle accident Tuesday night has sustained life-threatening injures. Police were called around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to the 400 block of Lansingville Road for the reported incident.
Lt. Dan Donahue said a teen male was driving a sedan away from a person’s house when another teen male jumped on the trunk of the vehicle while it was moving. Donahue said the driver does not appear to have been driving quickly, but the other teen fell off the back of the vehicle into the roadway.

According to supporting deposition made by the woman in the case, Jordan Goodwin, 25, was at the Dryden Hotel the first week of August when he became upset because somebody he didn’t like was there.

Concerned with more student housing, South Hill residents call for pause on building in neighborhood –Residents of Ithaca’s South Hill say they are tired of the trash, noise and parties that accompany the large number of students living in the neighborhood. With another student-geared duplex proposed, many people are calling for a moratorium on building in the area until there is a neighborhood plan.
6 – Woman pleads guilty to charges related to homicide of Newfield man
Woman charged with conspiracy in Newfield murder case pleads guilty — A woman accused of being involved in the homicide of a Newfield man last year pleaded guilty to conspiracy in Tompkins County Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Cameron Rundell, 30, was found dead outside his home on December 2, 2016. Police quickly ruled his death a homicide, and five people were later indicted on charges related to his death.
One of the five individuals, Melissa Minnick, 39, was charged with fourth-degree conspiracy after she was accused of buying several items to help the other four people take part in the robbery of Rundell’s home which eventually led to his death.
7 – Ithaca Welcomes Refugees plans to open new school this Fall
Ithaca Welcomes Refugees to open Global Roots Play School this Fall —Ithaca Welcomes Refugees (IWR), a local organization dedicated to fostering a welcoming and fair environment for refugees in the local community, is working to address a pressing need for childcare in Ithaca. This fall, IWR will open Global Roots Playschool.
For many years, refugees and other immigrants in this community have struggled to attend English language classes, because they did not have access to affordable and conveniently located childcare.
8 – Hundreds gather in Ithaca Commons for Charlottesville vigil
Ithaca stands with Charlottesville: ‘Rage is a very powerful tool’ — Hundreds of people carrying lights or candles met in the Ithaca Commons Sunday night to stand in solidarity with the people of Charlottesville after white supremacists rallied in the city, clashing with counterprotesters and leaving one woman dead.
“Fury is a powerful tool. Rage is a powerful tool,” Tompkins County Legislator Anna Kelles said. “Let it fuel you.”
9 – Ithaca crime stats show total crimes down, but violent crimes up from last year
Ithaca Crime in 2016: Total crimes down but violent crimes up from last year, data shows — In the past three years, reported crimes in Ithaca have gone down. A decrease in property crimes largely contributes to the lower total, as violent crimes have gone up.
