ITHACA, N.Y. — A charity softball game between local police, fire and EMS personnel raised more than $4,000 for the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
The softball game has become a yearly tradition among local emergency responders. The first game benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. Last year, proceeds went to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Central New York.
In the third annual softball game Sept. 30, Ithaca Fire defeated Bangs Ambulance in the first round and moved on to play reigning champions, the Ithaca Police. Ithaca Fire lost and Ithaca Police took home the trophy for the third year in a row.
During the event, there were door prizes, a race for kids during the 5th inning with mascots Sparky the Fire Dog and Gruff the Crime Dog.
The community raised more than $4,000 for the event. All of the proceeds will go to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and will help supply more than 9,000 meals. Donations are still being accepted at their website.
