ITHACA, NY – The Cornell University College Republicans is proud to announce that Dick Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States and former Secretary of Defense, will be speaking at Cornell University on Wednesday, March 21 st , 2018 at 6:30 PM. Doors will open at 6:00 PM, and there will be a brief question and answer session following Mr. Cheney’s keynote address. The event is free and open to the public.

Mr. Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 30th, 1941. Mr. Cheney attended Yale University, then later earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in political science at the University of Wyoming and also attended the University of Wisconsin Madison for post graduate work.

Mr. Cheney’s political career began with an internship at the office of Congressman William Steiger during the Nixon Administration in 1969. Soon after he joined the staff of Donald Rumsfeld. Mr. Cheney served in Nixon administration through out the first term in a number of capacities to include the Office of Economic Opportunity and Assistant Director to the Cost of Living Council. When Gerald Ford assumed President in August on 1974, Mr. Cheney returned to the White House and served throughout the Ford administration as White House Chief of Staff form 1975-1977.

Later, Cheney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Wyoming in 1978. He was then re-elected five more times until 1989. While in the House he was elected Chairman of the House Republican Conference and the House Minority Whip. In 1989, Cheney was appointed Secretary of Defense.

During his tenure as Secretary of Defense under President H.W. Bush, Mr. Cheney directed the U.S. invasion of Panama, Persian Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm. As recognition of his service President Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

After serving as Chairman and CEO of Halliburton Corporation in the 1990s, Mr. Cheney was selected as the Vice Presidential candidate by George W. Bush. He served throughout the 8 years in the Bush Administration focusing primarily on security matters. Mr. Cheney led the administration’s response to the September 11th attacks, and helped lead the administration’s efforts during the Iraq War and War in Afghanistan. Mr. Cheney is often regarded as the most powerful and influential Vice President in history. His is legacy is felt today both at home and abroad.
