TRUMANSBURG, N.Y. — The Tompkins County Health Department is trying to locate a cat that bit a person in Trumansburg.

An off-white domestic long-haired cat with gray tiger stripes on its head and paws reportedly bit a person at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on South Street between School House Lane and Whig Street in the Village of Trumansburg.

The person bitten said the cat looked well cared for and groomed, which indicates it was not a feral cat.

The health department wants to verify the vaccination status and health of the cat over a 10-day period. If the cat can be located and observed to be healthy, rabies can be ruled out and the person bitten can avoid post-exposure treatment for rabies.

Anyone with information regarding this cat is urged to call the Tompkins County Environmental Health Division at (607) 274-6688.
