ITHACA, N.Y. ā A Newfield multi-vehicle crash that sent several people to a regional trauma center late last week was caused by an intoxicated driver, police say.
Horseheads man Gary M. Stow, 37, was driving his black Ford truck around 10:17 p.m. on the 1400 block of Elmira Road Thursday when he was involved in a head-on crash with a Toyota SUV, police said in a news release. Multiple occupants in the SUV were taken by ambulance to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania with āserious injuries.ā
The Tompkins County Sheriffās Office, New York State Police, New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Team, Bangs Ambulance, and Newfield Fire Company all responded to the crash where they investigated the incident until about 3:20 a.m.
Stow was arrested at the scene, arraigned at the Town of Newfield Court, and taken to the Tompkins County Jail. He is no longer in custody as of Monday afternoon, according to a jail official.
He was charged with DWI, having an uninspected motor vehicle, failure to keep right and moving from lane unsafely. Stow is scheduled to appear in court again at 1 p.m. Thursday.
