ITHACA, N.Y. — By midnight, nearly all districts in New York have reported results. In Tompkins County, the final results came in shortly before 11 p.m.

In the Tompkins County Sheriff’s race, Derek Osborne beat incumbent Ken Lansing with 68 percent of the vote. Lansing received 27 percent of the vote and independent candidate Josh Brokaw secured 5 percent.

After the election, Osborne said he is looking forward to the work ahead. “I had no idea what to expect going into last night. I am extremely humbled by the faith our community has put in me.”

In a statement, Brokaw counted his independent campaign a success win or lose.

“We have excited people about the prospect of making something different happen in our local politics. I have had lots of conversations with people about what the sheriff’s office does, how it operates now, and what people want to see changed about its current practices. We have shown that you don’t need to spend much money on signs and mailers to compete with the old, boring established party electioneering practices that so many people have tuned out,” Brokaw said.

Lansing could not be reached for comment.
