TRUMANSBURG, N.Y. â€” Responding to requests to hold a dance that won’t keep children up past their bedtime, or adults out late on winter nights, Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca is hosting an easy-going afternoon contra dance. This event is a good way for newcomers to learn this centuries-old form of social dance, and should also keep experienced dancers on their toes. The O’Shanigans, featuring Eileen Nicholson Kalfass (fiddle), Phil Robinson (guitar), Katrina Mackey (flute), and Michael Ludgate (mandolin), will play lively tunes from New England, Southern Appalachia, Canada, the British Isles, Finland, and beyond. Leading the dances will be veteran caller Bob Nicholson from Syracuse, who is known far and wide for his clear teaching style, good humor, and wide repertoire of fun and interesting dances.

Beginners of all ages are always welcome; each dance is briefly taught and the steps are simple. No need to bring a partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes. Info: 607-273-0249 or www.hands4dancers.org.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2019, from 2-5 pm at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts, 5 McLallen St., Trumansburg, NY 14886. The cost is $8 HFDI members and students; $10 general admission; kids 12 and under free.
