BERKSHIRE, N.Y. — A Berkshire man has been arrested in connection with a crash earlier this month that killed 42-year-old Carl E. Hoaglin, Jr., of Newark Valley, who worked at Cornell University.
On June 4, the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a crash involving a motorcycle on East Berkshire Road in Berkshire, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The motorcyclist, who was identified as Hoaglin, died from his injuries at the scene. The sheriff’s office said Hoaglin was riding in the westbound lane of East Berkshire Road when another driver drove east in the westbound lane and caused Hoaglin to lose control of his motorcycle.
The driver fled the scene after the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
In a news release Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said deputies have arrested Dylin E. Abbatoy, 27, of Berkshire in connection with the crash. He was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, a felony, and traffic violations of moving from lane unsafely and failure to keep right.
Hoaglin was the assistant director of the East Campus Service Center at Cornell and started his career at the university in 2007 as an auto detailer, according to his obituary. He had many hobbies, his obituary said, but his favorite was diagnosing and repairing automotive and mechanical problems.
Abbatoy was arrested Friday, June 21, and arraigned in the Town of Berkshire Court and released under the supervision of the Tioga County Probation Department. He is due to return Aug. 19.
The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Division, Accident Investigation Unit, and Criminal Investigations Division performed the investigation and were assisted at the scene by the Berkshire Fire Department and Richford Fire Department.
