TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. — The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is responding to an increase in burglary complaints in recent weeks and is calling on residents to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

Most of the complaints have come from rural areas on the west side of Cayuga Lake, including multiple calls from the Towns of Enfield and Ulysses and at least one in neighboring Seneca County, according to Sheriff Derek Osborne. The sheriff’s office said most callers have reported residential burglaries that have taken place during daylight hours.

Osborne said he could not offer a description of a suspect or suspicious vehicle as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, but his office is investigating leads. He said there will be increased patrols in the areas where burglaries have been reported while the investigation is underway.

On social media, the sheriff urged residents to be vigilant and to safeguard their property.

The sheriff’s office recommends that residents lock the doors and windows on their homes, outbuildings and vehicles. They ask the public to report any suspicious activity to the Tompkins County 911 Center using the non-emergency line, 607-272-2444. In an emergency, dial 911.
