ITHACA, N.Y. — The Ithaca Police Department and local law enforcement agencies continue to search for Denzil Dexter Cummings, who is sought in connection with a fatal stabbing Wednesday.

In a small update Friday evening, the IPD said in a news release that they now have an active felony arrest warrant for Cummings and they are working closely with New York State Police, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, Cornell University Police, the FBI, the U.S. Marshal Service and the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office.

Police say they have received numerous tips and they are “actively following all leads.”

On Wednesday morning, police responded to a report of an injured person outside Auden Ithaca at 210 Lake St. During a press conference Wednesday, Acting IPD Chief Dennis Nayor said when officers arrived, they found a man — identified later to be 24-year-old Kennan Orson Michael Paul — bleeding who appeared to have stab wounds. The man later died of his injuries at Cayuga Medical Center.

Cummings and Paul were cousins, police said, and were involved in an altercation before the stabbing.

“Although this is a horrific event, it was not a random act of violence,” police said in a statement.

Anyone with information that could aid the investigation and help locate Cummings is urged to call 911.
