ULYSSES, N.Y. — Trumansburg firefighters helped save a dog that was trapped in a creek Saturday after heavy rain at Taughannock Falls State Park.
According to a news release, the Trumansburg Rescue team was called just after 6 p.m. Saturday by park police to help them on the gorge trail. When they arrived, they found the dog across the creek that was high with rainwater. The dog had initially entered to play and cool off, but the heavy rain caused the water level to rise rapidly, firefighters said, and the dog became stuck on the shore opposite the main gorge trail.
The rescue took about two hours, according to the news release, and was difficult due to the fast-moving water. Rescue crews used life jackets and an inflatable rescue boat to cross the creek, leash the dog and bring him to safety.
“The Trumansburg Fire Department credits the owners for staying calm, not entering the water and calling 911,” the fire department said in a news release. “They remind everyone to stay safe this summer, never try to swim after an animal that is stuck in the water and if your pooch is walking near dangerous areas….keep him on a short leash!”
