ITHACA, N.Y. ––An attempted kidknapping in Elmira found resolution in the City of Ithaca last week, after police apprehended the suspect on Elmira Road.
Following a manhunt by multiple police agencies, a suspect was arrested in Ithaca on Wednesday for an attempted kidnapping that took place on Tuesday on the 200 block of Mt. Zoar Street, in Elmira.
Investigators from the Elmira Police Departement, the Owego Police Department and the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office attempted to locate the suspect at various locations throughout the region throughout the evening of Feb. 4, following several anonymous tips and video surveillance efforts by law enforcement of the suspect and his vehicle.
According to a press release from Captain Anthony A. Alvernaz of the EPD, the following day, on Feb. 5, at around 10:00 a.m., investigators located the suspect’s vehicle parked behind a business on Elmira Road in Ithaca. The vehicle was not occupied.
Efforts coordinated with the City of Ithaca Police Department were successful in locating the suspect, who has been identified as Ryan A. Benjamin, 38 of Owego, when he ultimately returned to his vehicle around 3:10 p.m.
Benjamin has been charged with attempted kidnapping in the second degree, a class C felony. He was arraigned in Elmira City Court on Wednesday and remanded to the Chemung County Jail on $100,000 cash / $200,000 property bond.
