ITHACA, N.Y. –– The Ithaca Fire Department’s rope rescue team responded to yet another gorge accident this summer –– rescuing a teenage swimmer at Second Dam who was injured while cliff jumping Saturday.
Firefighters responded to the 30-foot damn near Giles Street after receiving a call just after noon for a 17-year-old male who was injured and stuck on a rock platform.
Bangs Ambulance Paramedics assisted Ithaca Firefighters at the scene. The IFD rope team used a ladder to get the injured male down off the platform and into a rescue basket in order to be carried out of the ravine. Medical personnel attended to his injuries, and the patient was transported to an area hospital for his injuries.
This is the fifth time that firefighters have responded to this area this summer.
As a reminder, anyone who is choosing to hike or swim in any of the dams or gorges should exercise extreme caution and heed warning signs.
