ITHACA, N.Y. –– New York State Police shut down Sheffield Road between Poole and Bostwick Roads in the town of Ithaca Monday morning due to reports of a “barricaded subject.”

The incident resulted in the subject being transported to an area hospital for mental health evaluation after surrendering to law enforcement.

The area of Sheffield Road was shut down for approximately three hours as NYSP responded, and medical personnel staged an ambulance. A team of crisis negotiators responded to the scene and established communication with the subject, who eventually surrendered peacefully to police.

It is unclear who reported the subject locked in his home or the nature of the incident leading to the involvement of State Police.

Bangs Ambulance assisted at the scene and transported the subject to the hospital at approximately 12:40 p.m.

No arrest was made and law enforcement is protecting the identity of the subject. No further information is available at this time
