ITHACA, N.Y.—The south side of the 400 block of East State Street will be closed to pedestrian and bike traffic for the foreseeable future due to ongoing construction that began over the summer.

The construction intends to create a new retaining wall adjacent to the existing retaining wall on the south side of East State Street. It began in August 2020 and will continue until about August 2021, though it is unclear how long the construction will actually cause the sidewalk and bike lane closure.

“Due to some safety concerns related to the existing wall, the contractor will be immediately closing the sidewalk and bike lane on the south side of the street,” the city’s announcement said. “Eastbound vehicular traffic will be maintained.”

As a result of the closure, foot and bike traffic on the south side of the street will be diverted to the north side of the street. The parking lot will also lose access to five parking spots temporarily.
