ITHACA, N.Y. –– Traffic is down to one lane as crews work to perform an emergency water main repair on Hector Street.

Beginning early this morning, the repair at 1013 Hector Street has closed the eastbound, or downhill lane which will be blocked in the vicinity of the work. Flaggers are directing traffic around the work zone.

The work is estimated to continue for another two to four hours or until repairs are complete.

Additionally, water service may be interrupted while the main is being repaired. Residents on parts of Hector St, Oakwood Ln, Warren Pl, Richards Pl, and Brookfield Rd may experience low or no water pressure.

Be warned, once the work is complete, the system will be flushed which may result in brown or rusty water. If that happens residents are encouraged to run the cold water tap in their bathtub until the water runs clear. Do not run hot water as sediment could be drawn into the water heater.

The city will notify residents if further action is required.
